A tripartite-plus consultation workshop on social protection extension to formal and informal workers will take place in Bishoftu, Ethiopia on September 20 and 21, 2022 with support from the SP&PFM project.

The event aims at creating awareness for stakeholders on the rights to inclusive social protection to all including to informal workers; and discussing innovative mechanisms in social security provision and unemployment insurance to informal workers and determine the roles of workers’ and employers’ organizations.

Agenda

Presentations and discussions on the following areas:

  • National social protection policy and its strategy.
  • The role of Trade Unions on expansion of social protection at workplaces.
  • Coverage extension of Social Protection to private sector and informal economy workers.
  • Definition, status, and current plan of POESSA for expansion of social security to informal sector /private sector.
  • Advocacy strategy on improving social security benefits.

Expected outcomes

  • Knowledge and awareness of social protection is enhanced;
  • Guidance on social protection advocacy strategy is  agreed on; and
  • A working group for inclusive and comprehensive social protection advocacy and promotion is established.

Expected participants

The consultative workshop is expected to be attended by 40 participants. Participants are members of CETU (Branch Office leaders & Basic Trade Union members), representatives of branch offices of the Confederations of Ethiopian Employers’ Federation (CEEF), Regional offices of disability associations, and workers engaged in the formal and informal employment
